Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek
This is a trek for everyone, from children through to grandparents! If you don’t have the time to do one of the longer treks, but still want to experience the majesty of the mountains and the Nepalese culture, then this is the trek for you!
The Ghorepani Poon Hill trek is a short but rewarding trip to the Annapurna region and is extremely popular. Join the Gateway Trek team on an enchanting journey through wide-open valleys and dense forests. Trek on some of the most amazing Eco-trails in the world and experience the nature and culture of the Nepalese people view magnificent mountain panoramas, sparkling waterfalls, all this in a week of trekking.
Poon Hill at an altitude of 3120m is the high point of the trek in more ways than one. The breathtaking panorama of the Himalayan ranges at sunrise is one of the classic Himalayan views. Watch the sunrise light up Mount Dhaulagiri (8167m), Annapurna I (8091m), Machhapuchhare (6998m), Nilgiri (7041m), Annapurna South (7219m), Annapurna II (7939m), Annapurna III (7555m), Annapurna IV (7525m), and Lamjung Himal (6988m). There is a wooden platform on Poon Hill where you can view the sunrise, but don’t forget to look behind you as well. You will see receding foothills floating above the ground-hugging mist as they disappear into the distance. It is one of the most spectacular mountain spots where you can enjoy either the sunrise or sunset over the Himalaya.
The gorgeous landscapes, green vegetation, the rhododendron forest, the flora and fauna of this region provide you with a lifetime of memories. Along with the natural scenery, trekkers get the opportunity to explore the lifestyle and culture of the different ethnic groups like Gurung, Magar, and Thakali.

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,350m)
Welcome to the Land of Mountains! Upon your arrival at Kathmandu Airport, our representative will be waiting for you, holding a Popular Treks signboard with your name on it. After transporting you to your hotel, you may like to rest for the remainder of the day, or you may like a stroll around the city if feeling energetic after your flight. We will give you a short briefing about our trip in the evening. Overnight in the hotel in Kathmandu.
WELCOME DINNER
Day 02: Sightseeing tour and trek preparation
In the morning we take a sightseeing tour of World Heritage Sites in Kathmandu, including Kathmandu Durbar Square, Boudhanath Stupa, and Pashupatinath Temple. After the tour, you can do any last-minute preparation for your Ghorepani trek, including shopping for any clothing or equipment you may require. Don’t forget to change some money to Nepalese rupees as you may want to buy extra snacks or drinks while on the trek. By the end of the day, you should be ready for your Ghorepani trek with your bag packed. Overnight in hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 03: Drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara (950m) ~ 7 hours.
Pokhara is only 200 kilometers from Kathmandu but the road is narrow and winding and will take most of the morning. This road lies between the two biggest cities in Nepal and is extremely busy, so be prepared for a slow trip. The trip is worth it though because Pokhara is situated beside the beautiful Phewa Tal (lake) and is surrounded by 8,000m peaks. It is the perfect place to rest up after a trek!
Pokhara is a tourist’s paradise with many natural and cultural heritage sites such as lakes, caves, Buddhist and Hindu temples, along with the magnificent views of mountains. The glistening white peaks of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges reflecting in the still waters of Phewa Tal is a magnificent sight. Stay overnight at hotel in Pokhara.

Day 04: Drive from Pokhara to Nayapul, (1.5 hours) and trek to Ulleri (2,050m) ~ 4 hours.
We drive to Nayapul and take our first steps of the trek. The trail follows the rocky road along the east bank of Modi Khola and after registering our permits at the check post we continue through Birethanti. Along the way, you will see waterfalls and a swimming hole, as the trail climbs gently up to Hile. We will stop for lunch and then cross the Tikhedhunga River on a suspension bridge. From here the trail climbs steeply on a man-made a stone staircase, which is said to have more than 3300 steps! The unrelenting staircase continues to the large Magar village of Ulleri where we will spend the night. Overnight in the tea house at Ulleri.

Day 05: Ulleri to Ghorepani (2,750m), 4/5 hours
After breakfast, we ascend to Ghorepani village via more stone stairs! As we ascend we can admire the spectacular scenery as Annapurna South looms large, coming and going from our view. In days past, horses were used to carry supplies from Nayapul to Ghorepani, where the horses were allowed to rest and drink. “Ghorepani” is a Nepalese word meaning “horse water” (many Nepalese village names end in “pani” eg Tatopani means “hot water”) Along the way we pass through magnificent oak and rhododendron forests and the trail crosses two sparkling clear streams, a small ridge, and another stream before making a short climb to Nangathanti. We pass more waterfalls, tiny villages, and several tea-houses before reaching Ghorepani. It is situated on the crest of a hill. Overnight in the tea house in Ghorepani.

Day 06: Ghorepani to Tadapani (2,700m) with a visit to Poon Hill (3,210m), 6 hours
We will get up early in the morning for the short climb to Poon Hill (3210m) in time to see the sunrise over the Himalayas. Poon Hill is the most popular spot to enjoy spectacular views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges and at sunrise, it is one of the classic Himalayan views. Take a thermos of tea with you and sit back, enjoy the view and take plenty of photos! Don’t forget to look at you as well and see the foothills appearing from the blanket of mist that is shrouding the valley below. After enjoying a cup of tea, we head back to Ghorepani and continue on our trail which now climbs steeply up to the top of a hill along an undulating path through rhododendron and pine forests. Descend on the north side of the ridge along a slippery trail interlaced with tree roots to Deurali. Here the trail continues its steep descent on a narrow path alongside a stream before reaching Banthanti. Continuing along an undulating trail through more rhododendron forest we finally reach our destination Tadapani. Overnight in the teahouse in Tadapani.

Day 07: Trek from Tadapani to Ghandruk (1950m.) 3 hours.
It’s an easy descent all the way, passing through a dense forest of oak, rhododendrons, and fir. This area is a popular destination for bird lovers. The terraced fields around Ghandruk make it one of the most picturesque Gurung villages in Nepal. The Gurung people are famous for their culture and traditional hospitality and Ghandruk is the second largest Gurung settlement in Nepal. To make your stay more enjoyable there are outstanding views of Annapurna South and Machhapuchre. Stay overnight in the teahouse at Ghandruk.

Day 08: Trek from Ghandruk to Nayapul and drive to Pokhara 6 / 7 hours
It is an easy descent down to Nayapul, where our transport is waiting to take us on the short drive to Pokhara. It’s a very enjoyable walk on the way down, you will see more neat terrace fields, waterfalls, and the mountains are still towering above us. After stopping for lunch in Birethanti we continue on our way to Pokhara. If you have the time spend an extra day in Pokhara, its a great place to rest up and there’s plenty to do and see. Stay overnight (or 2) in the hotel at Pokhara.

Day 09: Pokhara to Kathmandu by bus
It’s an early start to the day because the trip takes most of the day. We travel along the same route as we arrived, with a morning tea break and a lunch break. As mentioned previously it’s a busy road and can be slow at times but there is always something interesting to see on the way. We should arrive in Kathmandu in the mid or late afternoon, after which you can head to your hotel for a rest.

Day 10: Final Departure
This is the end of your Ghorepani trek, but of course, if you have the time you may spend extra days in Kathmandu. It is the usual practice for clients to invite their guides/porters to share a farewell dinner and exchange a khata (ceremonial scarf) If you have been happy with the service provided by the guide a tip is given. Relive your experiences of the trek around the dinner table and enjoy your last night in Kathmandu.
Our Ghorepani trek ends with your departure. Approximately 3 hours before your scheduled flight, our representative will pick you up from the hotel to drop you at the international airport for your flight home. We hope you enjoyed your trek. Please come back and see us soon.
