Maghe Sankranti
Maghe Sankranti is the Nepali festival which is celebrated on 1st of Magh every year, according to Nepali calendar. We celebrate it at the beginning of an auspicious month of Magh. Maghe Sankranti is also known as Makar Sankranti. On this day, it is believed that the beginning of new harvest, long and warmest day coming very soon and happy to be the coldest day of the year finished. The sun starts moving towards the Northern Hemisphere. This is the festival of Sun God; Hindu celebrates this festival by taking the ritual dip in Holy Rivers. During the day families get together and eat meals like molasses, ghee, sweet potatoes, and yam and sesame seed laddus.
In the Terai region, the first day of Magh is celebrated by Tharu community as Maghi. This is the new year of them, that’s why they celebrate this festival for a week with their families, friends, and relatives. They share their food and wear their own culture dress and show their dance.
