Annapurna Base Camp Trek
The Annapurna region of Nepal has been the premier trekking destination in Nepal since the 1960s. Situated to the south of the main Himalayan range, the Annapurna Himal has more than twenty major mountain peaks, including Annapurna I (8091m) and the sacred “fishtail mountain” Machhapuchhare (6997m). The ease of access to the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, by bus from Kathmandu or a short 25-minute flight to Pokhara and the excellent tea houses that line the main trails, make the Annapurnas a popular trekking destination.
The Annapurna Sanctuary is one of the finest tea house treks in the Annapurna region and is a world class trekking trail. To say the view from within the Annapurna Base Camp is spectacular is a great understatement, a 360-degree panorama often snow-capped peaks soaring up to around 8000m all around you. No wonder it is one of the most popular trekking destinations in the world and the most visited trekking region in Nepal. It lies at the heart of Annapurna Conservation Area (ACAP) which is the largest protected biodiversity area in Nepal.
This is a spectacular journey on foot to the South Face of Annapurna I and will lead you through many varied climatic conditions from sub-tropical to alpine. You will see a wonderful variety of flora and fauna and will meet many different ethnic groups. You will experience some of the diverse but equally friendly people and cultures of Nepal.
We begin the trek with a gradual ascent through the beautiful and varied landscape of cultivated terraced fields and lush forests of oak, magnolia and rhododendron trees. A short, early morning hike to Poon Hill (3230m) will give you an awesome view of the sunrise over the White Mountain range. This hike will also help your acclimatization for the trek into the Annapurna Base Camp Trek. The combination of tiny thatch-roofed villages set among the narrow terraced fields with the backdrop of stunning snow-capped mountain ranges makes it is one of the most picturesque treks in the Himalayas. After Poon Hill, we continue the Annapurna Base Camp trek following the beautiful green Modi Khola valley. The valley is surrounded by spectacular towering peaks and sheers high rock walls with gushing, sparkling waterfalls tumbling down into the roaring river below. We ascend to the fascinating Machhapuchhare Base Camp beyond which the valley widens as it reaches the lateral moraine of Annapurna South. Annapurna I, Annapurna III, Gangapurna, and Macchapuchhare (Fishtail) complete the fabulous panorama. A further gradual 3 hours steady climbing and you will reach Annapurna Base Camp. The vast spectacular natural alpine amphitheater of the Annapurna Sanctuary will have you spellbound.
An adventure with Popular Treks will be surely an amazing experience which is accompanied by our best adventure enthusiast team.

You will get the chance to view snow-capped mountain on the flight, mountains like Manaslu, Machhapuchhare, and Dhaulagiri to name just a few. As soon as we land in Pokhara, we drive to Nayapul for the start of our trek. The trail follows the rocky road along the east bank of Modi Khola. After about 30 minutes we reach a suspension bridge which leads us to Birethanti and a registration checkpoint. The trail climbs gently up to Hile, where we will stop for lunch and then cross the Tikhedhunga River on another suspension bridge. The trail now steepens considerably as we climb steps on a stone staircase, all 3767 of them! The unrelenting staircase continues to the large Magar village of Ulleri. Day 04: Ulleri to Ghorepani (2,750m), 4/5 hours
After breakfast, we ascend to Ghorepani village via more stone stairs. As we are ascending we can admire the spectacular scenery as Annapurna South looms large, coming and going from our view. Ghorepani translates as “horse water” and the story relating to this is this – in times past, horses carried goods from Nayapul stopping for drinking water at the place that’s now called Ghorepani. There are magnificent oak and rhododendron forests along the way and the trail crosses two sparkling clear streams, a small ridge, and another stream before making a short climb to Nangathanti. We pass waterfalls, tiny villages, and several tea-houses before reaching Ghorepani which is situated on the lap of a hill. Overnight in a teahouse in Ghorepani.
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Day 05: Ghorepani to Tadapani (2,700m) with visit to Poon Hill (3,210m), 6 hours
We will get up early in the morning for the short climb to Poon Hill (3210m) just in time to see the sunrise over the Himalayas. Poon Hill is the most popular destination to enjoy spectacular views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges and at sunrise, it is one of the classic Himalayan views. Take a thermos of tea with you and sit back, enjoy the view and take plenty of photos! After enjoying a cup of tea, we head back to Ghorepani. The trail now climbs steeply up to the top of the hill along an undulating path through rhododendron and pine forests. Descend on the north side of the ridge along a slippery trail interlaced with tree roots to Deurali. The trail continues its steep descent on a narrow path alongside a stream before reaching Banthanti. We continue along an undulating trail through rhododendron forest and finally reach our destination Tadapani. Overnight in the teahouse in Tadapani.
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Day 06: Tadapani to Chhomrong (2,170m) 6 hours

Our trail passes through a beautiful forest of oak and rhododendron interspersed with large stands of bamboo, before arriving in Kuldihar and from here it’s an easy descent to Bamboo. The trail through the bamboo forest is damp, cold and slippery so take care. Finally, we ascend uphill on a trail which is sometimes steep before reaching Dovan. Overnight in the teahouse in Dovan.
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Day 08: Dovan to Machhapuchhare Base Camp (3,700m) 5 hours
The trail crosses a stream and avalanche chute and then climbs across a landslide. On the way, there is a small temple, where people leave offerings of flowers and cloth. It is said that eggs and meat items are not allowed at this point, as locals believe it may upset the god Baraha, who protects the sanctuary. In about an hour we reach the village of Himalaya (so-called because originally there was only a single tea house here called Himalaya). It is a steep climb up through a much drier forest before reaching Hinku Cave. The trail crosses the remnants of a glacier just beyond Hinko and then climbs through large boulders to Deorali. From here, the valley opens up and we can enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding hills and Mt. Dhaulagiri. We are now at around 3,000m and the vegetation has become sparse allowing magical views of the valley, the river below and cliffs adorned with waterfalls. We follow the valley trail on a steady uphill climb and we cross more avalanche paths, so care must be taken. From here we get excellent views of Machhapuchhare, Gangapurna and Annapurna South. Overnight in the tea house in Machhapuchhare Base Camp.
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Day 09: Machhapuchhare to Annapurna Base Camp (4,130m), 2/3 hours
Today is a very short and easy walk to reach our main destination. It will take you 2 hours and pleasant walk but the route can be hard to find if there’s fresh snow. Before long you can see the tea houses surrounding the base camp, but the view is deceptive and it takes quite a while to reach them as the trails stick close to the foot of a large lateral moraine. (The base camp is the site of the 1970 British Annapurna Expedition) We are now in a natural amphitheater surrounded by spectacular views mountains wherever we look. We continue to walk beside a glacial moraine until we reach the base camp of Mt. Annapurna and it is amazing. We are surrounded by magnificent peaks and the only way into this area is through the gorge we just hiked. Overnight in the tea house in Annapurna Base Camp.
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Day 10: Annapurna Base Camp to Bamboo (2,310m), 7/8 hours
From Annapurna Base Camp our trail rapidly descends past the Machhapuchhare Base Camp, Deorali, Himalaya and Donovan and finally to Bamboo where we spend the night. Day 11: Bamboo to Jhinu Danda (1,780m), 5/6 hours
Today, we will follow the same trail until Chhomrong. Once we have passed Khuldighar we see an experimental sheep farm. At Jhinu you can bathe in natural hot springs and rejuvenate your aching muscles. Overnight in a tea house in Jhinu Danda.
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Day 12: Jhinu Danda to Nayapul and drive to Pokhara. 6 hours
