Everest Base Camp Trek – 17 days
The Everest Base Camp Trek is probably the most popular and best-known trek in Nepal. Mt. Everest, the highest mountain in the world brings thousands of trekkers to this part of Nepal each year. It lies in the Solukhumbu district in the North-East of Nepal, which is famous for being the homeland of the Sherpa, known throughout the world for their ability in climbing the world’s highest peaks. The Sherpa’s originally migrated from Tibet via the Nangpa La and the word “Sherpa” in Tibetan, meaning “people from the east”. (Incidentally Mt. Everest is known as Chomolungma to the Sherpas, and Nepalese call it Sagarmatha).
The legendary Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay were the first to climb Mt. Everest in 1953 and now trekkers have the opportunity for their own epic journey to the Everest Base Camp of the world’s highest mountain, following their footsteps.
The trek starts at Kathmandu with a domestic flight to Lukla (2,800m). The flight to Lukla only takes about forty minutes but the views of the eastern Himalaya are amazing; make sure you sit on the left-hand side of the plane for the best views. Flights to Lukla will only take place in the best possible weather conditions, and flights will be canceled if weather conditions are bad.
From Lukla, we trek to the village of Phakding on the first trekking day. From Phakding we trek up the valley of the Dudh Koshi to the famous village of Namche Bazzar. Namche Bazzar is a large market town and as it sits above 3400m, it’s a good place to enjoy a rest day. To the east, the valley of the Imja Khola and Dudh Koshi lead to Everest and Cho Oyu (8,153m) massifs respectively. The sacred mountain Khumbila can be seen from Namche and a few hours from Namche are the twin villages of Khunde and Khumjung, with the beautiful Thamserku Mountain towering high above. These villages are considered by some to be the oldest Sherpa villages, blessed by Guru Rinpoche, the great Indian master who introduced Buddhism to Nepal from Tibet. The trekking route continues to ascend the Khumbu valley over suspension bridges, through beautiful rhododendron forests and small settlements. A little further ahead, a track branches off to the left, leading to Gokyo Lakes. We will continue on the Everest Base Camp track towards Tengboche, famous for its monastery and a popular overnight stop. Many mountaineering groups visit the monastery to receive a blessing from the Lama, before attempting to climb Mt. Everest. Sherpa’s celebrate Mani Rimdu festival here for three days, starting on the full moon of the ninth lunar month, which normally falls in October or November.
The trekking route leads us through several small villages with stunning scenery wherever you care to look until finally arriving at Gorak Shep. From Gorak Shep, it’s a short walk beside the Khumbu glacier and then onto the glacial moraine itself before arriving at the Everest Base Camp. Many trekkers rise early in the morning to climb Kala Patthar for outstanding sunrise views of Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Nuptse, Mt. Tabuche, and the Khumbu Glacier. Kala Patthar is at 5,500m so it’s important to take your time and be aware of any symptoms of altitude sickness. (Incidentally, in the days of Hillary and Tenzing, Gorak Shep was the Everest Base Camp).
After lots of pictures on your camera and memories, head back down Gorak Shep and on to Pheriche for the night. Descend to Lukla via Namche Bazzar the following day. We end our remarkable trek with a scintillating flight back to Kathmandu from Lukla.
The Everest Base Camp Trek is physically quite challenging but with the help of our professional and experienced guides we make sure that you achieve your dream destination to the World’s highest camp.
Throughout the trek, you will be staying at trekking tea house lodges which provide meals and basic accommodation. On a popular trek like the Everest Base Camp, accommodation is usually quite comfortable.

Day 16: Free day with a sightseeing tour.
A reserve or spare day in Kathmandu is well worth it as there are lots to do and see here. Of course, there may be a flight delay or cancellation due to bad weather in Lukla which occurs sometimes, so it is important to have a spare day or two in case this happens. Himalayan weather can be very unpredictable! So if you have the time visit the Durbar Square, the Bodhnath, Swayambhunath or Pashupatinath. An eye-opening experience!!
