Upper Mustang Trek
Upper Mustang trek is one of the most popular trekking destinations in the world. It is an exploration of the concealed valleys of Upper Mustang in Nepal, situated between Tibet and the Himalayas – a place different from the rest of the world. This popular trek is a perfect destination for visiting oldest Buddhists monasteries and many historical caves and attractive landscape. It is a restricted trekking trail in Nepal and is also popular as “The Last Forbidden Kingdom”. Lo Manthang is the hub of Mustang district which was once an independent kingdom with its own ruler. The walled city of Lo Manthang used to be a part of the Tibetan kingdom and one of the major attractions for the tourist also. The old culture which follows an ancient form of Buddhism is a great matter of interest to most trekkers who come to visit this mysterious region. Mustang is changing but it still surprises the visitors with its stunning vista and the stubborn way it clings to its unique culture. The people living here called Lobas are still happy with what they have. The Mustang live their lives unique to themselves and keep surprising backpackers to no ends, one of these is a tradition where a single girl is married to 3 brothers from the same family, which we called “Polyandry”. Sky burial is still remaining practice in this region.
The present King of this Kingdom is Jigme Palbar Bista who is the 25th descendant of Ame Pal. He is popular as Lo Gyalbu among the locals and lives at the four-story palace at Lo. In present days, the king is involved in a few ceremonial roles only yet, is respected and loved by all the Mustang people. This village mainly has houses made of whitewashed clays. You can observe the Tibetan culture mixed with Nepalese traditions and languages.
It is believed that Guru Rinpoche had fought with demon among the mustang’s snow-capped mountain, desert, canyons, and grassland. Once Guru Rinpoche killed the demon, it is said he scattered the demon’s body parts across Mustang valley, its blood formed the towering red cliffs and its intestines tumbled near to Ghami where people have later on build the stone prayer wall, the longest in Nepal, on top of the demon’s.
Upper Mustang was a restricted area till 1992 for foreign visitors and outsiders. Today, foreigners are allowed but can only enter Upper Mustang after they buy a special permit of US$500 for ten days. The trip to Mustang is arranged by our company.
